Pribilof Islands Collaborative: Promoting a Strong Economy and a Healthy Ecosystem
What is the Pribilof Islands Collaborative?
The Pribilof Islands Collaborative is a collaborative effort among key entities from the Pribilof Islands communities, the conservation community, and Alaska's fishing industry, to address fish and wildlife declines in this unique marine ecosystem, while supporting viable Native and commercial fisheries. The Pribilof Islands Collaborative (PIC) is a group of people with diverse backgrounds, interests, and perspectives working together to identify ways to improve and enhance the health of the ecosystem and economy in and around the Pribilof Islands. Members of this group include Pribilof Islands residents, scientists, fisheries industry representatives, conservationists, and ordinary citizens. Over the last year, participants in this process have met formally several times to discuss declines in the halibut and crab fisheries, northern fur seal, and bird populations of the Pribilof Islands area. Participants also have discussed the consequences of these declines for the economy and cultural well-being of the region. These stakeholders have agreed to work together for a 18-24 month process (through 2006), during which they will seek agreement on areas of common interest; identify information gaps; and identify actions that support the goal of sustainable fisheries, wildlife, and economies. Such an approach will help to ensure a strong Bering Sea economy and continuation of the Islands' traditional culture, both of which are dependent on a healthy ecosystem.
