Holiday Greetings BCNet visitors!

In our latest round of regional workshops designed to examine and collate the collective experiences of BCN-supported community-based conservation projects in Asia, the Biodiversity Conservation Network (BCN) would like to inform you of our upcoming Workshop on Enterprise-Based Approaches to Conservation in the Pacific, 10 - 14 January 1999, at Loloata Island and Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The workshop will be attended by representatives of BCN's Melanesian projects, including the Research and Conservation Foundation, Pacific Heritage Foundation; Conservation International, Foundation for People and Community Development, University of South Pacific, and the South Pacific Action Committee for Human Ecology and the Environment.
The Pacific Workshop will have two parts. The first part of the workshop will be conducted at Loloata Island Resort, outside Port Moresby, from 10 January through 13 January. The second part, our concluding day, will be conducted at the Islander Travelodge in Port Moresby, 14 January.
As you can see in the draft agenda (below), at Loloata, we are planning to have the teams first present the overall projects to each other. Workshop members of each project team will then form discussion groups and share results on the following key topics:
- Enterprise Development
- Working with Community Members
- Management Support of Field Based Projects
- Education, Communications and Government Relations
We will then use the last day at Loloata to synthesize lessons learned and prepare our presentations for the public. Final presentation of results will take place at the Islander Travelodge. Members of the PNG Government, media, and conservation and development community will be invited to attend.
Results from the meeting will be posted in late January 1999 on BCNet, so stay tuned to learn about what experiences and lessons the Pacific projects have generated during the last few years within the Network. As BCN believes that many of the most important results from the overall BCN Program will come from the voices of the community and project participants themselves, we look forward to the opportunity to share their expertise and insights with you in the new year.
