Shade-tolerant species possess certain physiological adaptations (e.g. enhanced photosynthetic system) that better enable them to survive in the shade. Photo shows Brosimum alicastrum seedlings growing in the understory of a tropical forest in Veracruz, Mexico. The seedlings are experiencing a brief period of sunflecks.
