Dive Tourism off the Reefs of the Padaido Islands, Irian Jaya, Indonesia

Shellfish are an important part of people's diet in the Padaidos. In the past, instruments similar to crowbars were used to wrest shellfish from beneath the coral. Now, with monitoring and increased awareness, people in the Padaidos are trying to make their shellfishing more sustainable and, at the same time, are looking to sell their catch to dive tourists visiting Dawi. This creature was taken from a cage--not the reef--just off Dawi's coast. Lunch! Photo: Bernd Cordes 1996
