BSP's Africa & Madagascar Program

The African continent and Madagascar contain a great wealth of biodiversity. Renewable natural resources support the subsistence of millions of people in Africa, and make an important contribution to many national economies. Africa's ecosystems contribute to the stability of local, regional, and global ecological processes. However, Africa continues to lose biological diversity and natural resources as a result of habitat alteration, over-harvesting, and pollution.

BSP's Africa & Madagascar program worked with partners in Africa and elsewhere to help conserve biodiversity and to encourage the wise use of natural resources through the promotion of sustainable livelihoods. Taking a broad landscape approach, the program:

  • Analyzed innovative and traditional approaches to biodiversity conservation and published lessons and tools.
  • Strengthened African capacity for conservation.
  • Promoted exchanges and networking among different regions of Africa and Madagascar.
  • Provided technical assistance to USAID and other partners.
  • Acted as a neutral facilitator.
