BSP's Asia & Pacific Program
Ban Udyam
Supporting sustainability of community-based
natural resource management in Nepal.
The Ban Udyam (BU) project was committed to helping members of the
Environment and Forest Enterprise Activity Project (EFEA) area communities
to develop forest-based incomes by improving their direct links to markets
and private sector sources of technical and financial support. Implementation
of the project provided analyses, pilot activities, training, and technical
assistance to community-level groups and individuals, and indirectly supported
other assisting INGOs, NGOs, and His Majesty's Government of Nepal agencies
with market and extension information.
The activities of the project were guided by commitments to people, sustainability,
policy reforms, and participatory decision-making within user groups. Technical assistance
was provided to community forest user groups, conservation committees, private forest
associations, micro-entrepreneurs, EFEA partner NGOs, and government agencies in the
areas of sustainable forest management practices, market research, and micro-enterprise
development. The technical assistance provided information, strengthened
the user groups, and fostered women's participation in these activities. In addition,
Nepali forestry was strengthened through long-term master's degree training overseas.
