BSP's Latin America & Caribbean Program
Pic Macaya National Park, Haiti
Protecting natural habitats and providing
technical assistance on sustainable development.
In 1993, USAID/Haiti requested BSP's help in providing technical assistance
on sustainable development activities to local communities residing in the buffer
zone of Pic Macaya National Park, the highest mountain peak in the southwest peninsula,
while protecting the remaining natural habitat from further degradation and encroachment.
BSP trained staff from UNICORS, the local organization contracted by USAID/Haiti, in best
practices for implementing sustainable development activities in the region. Also,
The Centre de Formation et d'Encadrement Technique (CFET) produced a training manual,
"Management of Protected Areas in Haiti," for the Haitian park staff
and a video (in Creole and English), highlighting the biological importance of Park Macaya and USAID's
efforts to conserve the park.
