BSP's Latin America & Caribbean Program
Ecosystem Protection in Southern Mexico
Working with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) on the Mexico Ecodevelopment Program.
BSP worked with WWF and local partner organizations in Southern Mexico on the
Mexico Ecodevelopment Program (MEP). MEP's goal was to protect the diverse ecosystems
while improving the sustainable use of natural resources by local people.
The four priority areas and local organizations were:
Calakmul (Pronatura Península de Yucatán)
El Ocote (Línea Biósfera, A.C)
El Triunfo (Instituto de Historia Natural)
Chimalapas (Maderas del Pueblo del Sureste)
In support of this goal, BSP's project focused on identifying, promoting,
and strengthening agroecological techniques and natural resource management schemes.
Activities included land-use planning, development of monitoring and evaluation systems,
and strengthening of partner organizations responsible for implementing projects in the field.
