BSP's Latin America & Caribbean Program
Pronatura, A.C.; Mexico
Strengthening the conservation capacity of
a leading national conservation organization.
A grant from BSP made it possible for TNC to provide Pronatura A.C.,
a leading national conservation organization in Mexico, with technical
assistance and training in institutional development and conservation
programs. This work built on the successful experiences with TNC's
Parks in Peril Program in Mexico. Using selected Parks in Peril sites as
learning centers, TNC extended the tools and techniques of the program to
Pronatura's regional offices. The work included developing ecoregional
conservation strategies, planning for on-site conservation programs,
preparing work plans and budgets, and conducting long-term financial
planning. TNC collaborated with BSP to develop the appropriate measures
for success and disseminate lessons learned about best practices.
With funds from this project, TNC, Pronatura, A.C., BSP, and USAID were also able
to negotiate a debt-for-nature swap that leveraged considerable Mexican funds to
be used for management of protected areas in Southern Mexico. This debt swap will
increase Pronatura's ability to reach its conservation goals and support biodiversity
conservation in the region.
