BSP's Latin America & Caribbean Program

Sierra Madre Occidental; Chihuahua, Mexico

Building a biosphere reserve through community planning.

From 1993 to 1998, BSP supported the Sierra Madre Alliance, the U.S. partner of the Advisory Council of the Sierra Madre (CASMAC), in its efforts to advise and assist the Tarahumara and Tepehuan people, and the neighboring communities in Chihuahua, to regain control of their forests and way of life. Edwin Bustillos, founder of CASMAC and 1996 winner of the Goldman Environmental Prize for North America, has led indigenous groups in creating a model of conservation in the Pino Gordo region. Dozens of inspired communities are now proposing forest reserves that may one day be integrated into a single biosphere reserve.
