Agriculture and Aquaculture

Food, one of life's basic necessities, is produced around the globe using a wide variety of agricultural and aquacultural practices, each having a different impact on the environment. But while food production is an endeavor that provides numerous opportunities for conservation, improper methods and their effects can also threaten wildlife and environments around the world.

WWF focuses on reconciling the needs of people with other life on our planet. Although preserving natural areas is the cornerstone of biodiversity conservation, most biodiversity is found in the disturbed landscape, which represents only about 10 percent of land area. Demand for grain is increasing rapidly as the world's population grows. Additionally, rising incomes allow people to eat more animal protein--milk, eggs, fish and meat--the production of which requires large amounts of feed grain. With these growing global food needs, sustainable resource management becomes even more urgent.

Managing social and environmental costs and benefits is a perpetual challenge that the Center for Conservation Innovation (CCI) at WWF is addressing as it works to conserve biodiversity through innovative, people-based solutions.
