In 2006, with support from Unilever, the Packard Foundation and the International Financial Corporation, WWF began to compare certification programs for salmon, shrimp and tilapia, as well as cocoa, palm oil, cotton and soy. Through this analysis, WWF identified several shortcomings with programs that have affected the way we approach our own aquaculture certification work. As a result, all WWF aquaculture dialogues seek to:
Use up-to-date information on the impacts of each species and find the appropriate role for producer-provided data
Narrow the gaps in knowledge that exist about key impacts
Build consensus about key social and environmental impacts or how to rank them by importance
Be strategic and focused, rather than exhaustive, in determining impacts
Be results-based rather than proscriptive
Identify cost-effective and meaningful indicators that apply to all scales of production
Find appropriate proxies where measurable results are not yet cost effective
Identify the appropriate linkages between environmental conditions and food safety
Find ways to include small-scale producers in the discussions
