Adapting to Climate Change
To avoid the worst consequences of climate change, we need to radically reduce the world’s carbon emissions. But we must also respond to the significant impacts the world is presently experiencing because of the pollution already in the atmosphere.
Thankfully, we are not helpless in the face of climate change.
Just like individuals can build their homes to withstand flooding and hurricanes, there is much society can do to prepare for more frequent and severe climate hazards such as floods, droughts and rising sea-levels.
What is WWF doing to help?
Around the globe WWF is working with local communities, governments and others to help nature and people successfully adapt to a warmer world.
Some examples include:
- Helping communities in the Eastern Himalayas adapt to water scarcity by collecting rainwater and promoting drought-resistant crops.
- Restoring mangrove forests in Coastal East Africa to buffer shorelines from storm erosion.
- Protecting coral reefs in the Coral Triangle to build their resilience against bleaching events.
- Identifying remaining areas where polar bears can live on solid Arctic sea ice for decades to come.
