Crocodile facts:
Listed as endangered on the US Federal Endangered Species List, the American crocodile ranges in the Pacific from western Mexico to Ecuador and along the Atlantic from the southern tip of Florida to Guatemala. They feed mainly on fish and other small marine creatures, but larger individuals may eat small mammals, birds and turtles. Mangrove swamps and turtle grass beds are important foraging grounds for crocodiles, offering an abundance of fish and invertebrates. American crocodiles are at risk from drowning in fishing gear, illegal hunting and habitat destruction—due to development of nesting beaches and nursery areas.
