Farm Bill Conference Report Helps Protect America's Prairies

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) today issued the following statement from Martha Kauffman, managing director of WWF’s Northern Great Plains program, in response to today’s Farm Bill Conference Report:

“By including two important provisions – conservation compliance for crop insurance premium subsidies and a Sodsaver provision for the states facing the greatest losses of grasslands and wetlands – the conference committee is recognizing that a responsible farm safety net is one that protects the natural resources on which our food security depends.

“This bipartisan reform, combined with more than $1 billion for grasslands and wetlands conservation easements, reinforces the importance of common-sense protections for land, water, and wildlife in the future of American agriculture policy.

“It’s critical that Congress maintain this momentum over the coming days and pass a long-term Farm Bill that protects America’s grasslands and wetlands and balances the needs of both people and nature. We’re grateful for the conference committee’s diligence and efforts to find consensus on this important issue.”
