Groundbreaking Study Reinforces Need to Slash Aviation Emissions Now

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) issued the following statement from Brad Schallert, senior program officer for international climate change policy, on new research by Manchester Metropolitan University highlighting the immediate need for the UN International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to adopt a global, market-based measure to reduce carbon emissions from international aviation:

“The only thing more frustrating than waiting for a delayed flight is waiting for ICAO delegates to agree on an expedient global approach to slashing emissions. This new research puts a laser-like focus on the need to solve this problem now, not in another three years, but today.

“This research clearly demonstrates that a global market-based measure will reduce emissions faster than any other practical step. While ICAO negotiators are debating how far to kick the can down the road, both environmentalists and the airlines themselves are asking for a clear decision this year.

“The longer we wait to reduce aviation emissions, the greater the cost -- to the aviation industry and to our planet.”
