Doctoral Fund Terms

A. Application schedule

Complete applications, including letters of reference, must be received by 5 pm Eastern Standard Time (Washington, DC) on January 30, 2009. Applicants should complete the online web form well in advance of this deadline to provide referees sufficient time to upload their letters of reference.  Late applications will not be reviewed. Applicants who are waiting for doctoral admissions decisions must submit proof of acceptance into their doctoral programs by May 1, 2009. Awards will be announced in spring 2009 and must be accepted by May 15, 2009. Fellowships will begin in September 2009.

B. Eligibility

To be eligible for a Kathryn Fuller Fellowship, you must meet all of the following eligibility criteria:

    1. Proof of acceptance into a doctoral program by May 1, 2009.

    2. A research plan that focuses on tiger conservation in one or more of WWF’s Global Priority Tiger Conservation Landscapes (see “Global Priority” landscapes, in red, on map insert below).

    3. A minimum of two years’ prior conservation experience and demonstrated field work.

    4. Ability to correspond and publish in English.

    5. Current Russell E. Train Fellows through WWF’s Education For Nature Program are not eligible.  Individuals are not able to receive two concurrent awards from WWF (either Train or Fuller); however, you may apply to both programs) WWF will not issue funding to individuals who have not yet (a) completed their research and reporting requirements under their Train Fellowships and/or (b) fully spent the funding previously awarded.

    6. A citizen of one of the following tiger range states: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Russia, Thailand, or Vietnam.

   

C. Location of Field Research

Doctoral field research supported by the Kathryn Fuller Science For Nature Fund must be conducted in one or more of the WWF 13 Global Priority Tiger Landscapes: (see map above)

  1. Amur Heilong – Russia, China
  2. Terai Arc Landscape – India, Nepal
  3. Satpuda Maikal – India
  4. Sunderbans – India, Bangladesh
  5. Lower Mekong Forests (Dry Forests, Annamites) – Cambodia, Lao, Vietnam
  6. Taman Negara Belum/Hala Bala – Malaysia, Thailand
  7. Kerinci-Seblat/BBS Riau (Tesso Nilo)-Bukit Tigapuluh – Indonesia
  8. Manas-Namdapha – India, Bhutan
  9. Eastern Ghats – India
  10. Kayeh Kren Tennaserim Western Forest Complex – Thailand
  11. Western Ghats – India
  12. Sumatran Bukit Tikapulu / Tesso Nilo – Indonesia
  13. Kaziranga – India

D. Mentors

Each fellow will be assigned a WWF scientist to serve as his/her mentor and provide guidance throughout the doctoral fellowship. WWF mentors will be paired with fellowship finalists during the final stages of the selection process.

E. Duration

The fellowship tenure will be up to three consecutive years and will begin in September 2009. After the first year of the fellowship, disbursement of funds will be contingent upon satisfactory progress towards the research goals outlined in the research proposal, as well as timely completion of detailed interim and end-of-year activity reports.

F. Stipend and Allowances

Fellows will receive no more than $20,000 over the three-year fellowship term. Funds may be used to cover expenses for research costs, tuition and related fees, living expenses for meals and accommodations, required books and materials, travel to and from the academic program and/or field site, and local transportation expenses upon approval.

Applicants must submit a budget of estimated expenses for review with their online applications. The following expenses are not eligible for Fuller Fellowship funding:

  • pre-academic language study or reimbursement for university admissions or language proficiency exams
  • living expenses for family members
  • clothing or other personal items
  • excess baggage and moving expenses such as telephone connection, cable, furniture etc.
  • telephone and communications expenses (including cellular phones)
  • travel not related to the academic program including sight-seeing, entertainment, short courses or seminars
  • computers or other equipment such as printers, scanners, etc.
  • automobile or other vehicle purchase / auto insurance
