Application Procedure

1. Research proposal
The proposal addresses what the applicant hopes to accomplish during the fellowship period and how it relates to WWF's mission. The text of the proposal must not exceed 3000 words. The word limit does not including your abstract, figures, tables, or bibliography; Please use 2.5 cm margins, Times New Roman 11 point font, and 1.5 line spacing.

The research proposal should consist of: 1) an introduction and background section; 2) a statement of research objectives, methods, significance and expected results; 4) an explanation of how the fellowship activities will contribute to conservation practice in general and WWF's mission and programs in particular; 5) the research schedule; and 6) a justification of the choice of sponsoring scientist and host institution.

2. Resume
The resume should be no longer than 5 pages, and include a) address, telephone number(s), fax number, and e-mail address; b) education and academic degrees with dates conferred, awards, and honors; d) present and past positions; e) publications, presentations, and field research; and f) a list of pending commitments for the fellowship period, including other fellowship and grant applications you have submitted, other pending employment, and any other professional activities that may require a significant time commitment during the fellowship period.

In addition to the document referenced above, please send us an Indirect cost waiver. The indirect cost waiver is a letter verifying that your sponsoring institution is willing to provide space, basic services, and supplies and will waive indirect costs in excess of $2,500 per year. Request the waiver early to ensure your application will be complete by the deadline. If you are proposing to be based at WWF-US headquarters in Washington, DC, this waiver is not required. 3. References
It is recommended that applicants contact each of their references before submitting the web form in order to let them know that they will be receiving an email requesting a letter of reference. Based on the email addresses provided by the applicant in the web form, each of the three references will be sent an email asking them to upload a letter of recommendation. If one of your references does not see the email in their inbox, please check the email address that you entered, resend the request online, and check to make sure that the email is not being filtered by their 'spam protection'.

Letters sent on behalf of applicants should be in '.pdf' or '.doc' format, and should not be larger than 4MB. One letter should be from the proposed supporting scientist, one should be from your dissertation advisor (or other individual on your committee, if your dissertation advisor cannot be contacted or is serving as your sponsoring scientist), and the other should be from a person in your field who is familiar with your career goals and achievements.

Applicants will receive an email notification when each letter of reference is received, and should use those emails to track which letters have been received in their file. All letters must be received by 5 pm EST November 30, 2009.

Please note that it is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all letters of reference are submitted before the deadline, and that referees have sufficient time to submit letters.

4. Review Process - Evaluation and Selection of Fellows
Fellowships will be awarded on the basis of 1) Applicants' ability, accomplishments, and potential to become a leader in their field 2) Scientific merit, feasibility, and significance of the research proposal, and 3) Relevance to conservation practice in general and WWF's mission and programs in particular.

Applications will be initially reviewed by WWF staff to ensure eligibility and relevance to conservation practice in general and WWF's mission and programs in particular. Mail reviews will be used to select the top 40-50 applicants. An advisory panel of scientists will be convened to select finalists.

Each finalist recommended by the science advisory panel will be invited to WWF-US headquarters for an interview with a committee of WWF staff. This committee will make a final selection based on the comments of the science advisory panel, the potential of the applicants' work to inform conservation practice and WWF programs, and the applicant's performance in the interview. WWF will help match finalists with their WWF sponsoring scientist at this stage in the review process. Please note that the final interview will be conducted in English.
