2009-2010 Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships

In 2009-2010, the Kathryn Fuller Science for Nature Fund will support one new post-doctoral research Fellow. The Fuller Fellowship will be awarded to an early-career scientist addressing the following research topic: How do different biofuel throughputs compare against credible performance levels?

Fellowships will be awarded on the basis of applicants' ability, accomplishments, and potential to become a leader in their field.

Fellowship Terms

A. Application schedule
Complete applications, including letters of reference and institutional agreement to the terms of the fellowship, must be received by 5 pm EST October 20, 2008. Applicants should fill out the online web form well in advance of this deadline to provide references sufficient time to upload their letters of reference.  Late applications will not be reviewed. Awards will be announced by October 31, 2008. Awards must be accepted by November 7, 2008, and the research fellow must attend the 2008 Fuller Symposium on November 19 and 20, 2008. Fellowships will begin in January 2009.

B. Eligibility

In order to be eligible for a Kathryn Fuller Fellowship for postdoctoral research, you must meet all of the following eligibility criteria:

    1. You (will) have earned your doctoral degree between January 31, 2004 and December 31, 2008.  Your dissertation defense must be completed successfully by August 31, 2008.

    2. You are proposing a research plan that addresses the topic How do different biofuel throughputs compare against critical performance levels?

    3. You have identified a scientist at an academic or research institution who will serve as co-sponsor.  A WWF co-sponsor will be identified during the final stages of the selection process.

    4. You are not an employee of WWF-US or an immediate family member of a WWF-US employee.

C. Location of Work

Research supported by the Kathryn Fuller Science For Nature Fund may be conducted at any U.S. or foreign host institution, including any WWF office, that will provide adequate space, basic services, and supplies for the individual and is amenable to the terms and overhead rates of the Fellowship.

D. The Mentors

Fellows will be mentored by two individuals: one at an external research institution and one at WWF. The applicant should make arrangements with an external sponsoring scientist before applying. The WWF sponsoring mentor will be identified with the help of WWF staff during the final stages of the selection process, based on the applicant's research area.

E. Duration

The fellowship tenure will generally be two years, and will begin in January, 2009. Second-year renewal of the fellowship is contingent upon satisfactory progress towards the research goals outlined in the research proposal, as well as timely completion of detailed interim and first-year activity reports.

F. Stipend and Allowances

Fellows will receive an annual stipend commensurate with their experience and costs. In addition, Fellows may receive up to $15,000 per year for expenses directly related to the conduct of the research, such as materials and supplies, subscription fees, travel, and publication expenses. The host institution may receive an allowance of up to $2,500 per year to assist with indirect costs incurred in support of the Fellow.

Fellows become part of the WWF global network of results-driven scientists and conservationists. They will have access to minds and resources that are dedicated to bringing the best ideas to bear on the critical task of conserving the diversity and abundance of life on Earth. And they have the opportunity to link their research to this ongoing effort, and see their ideas put into practice.

Application Procedure

A. Application Materials

Electronically submit personal information, cover letter, abstract and contact information for your three references via the web form. The second page of the web form will also ask you to upload a SINGLE .'pdf' or '.doc' files containing the following items:

1.         Research plan. The plan addresses the applicant's credentials/qualifications and how the applicant intends to conduct the posted research. The text of the plan must not exceed 3000 words.  The word limit does not including your figures, tables, or bibliography; Please use 2.5 cm margins, Times New Roman 11 point font, and 1.5 line spacing. The research plan should consist of: 1) an introduction and background section; 2) a statement of research objectives, methods, significance and expected results; 4) an explanation of how the fellowship activities will contribute to the stated research question in general and WWF's mission and programs in particular; 5) the research schedule; and 6) a justification of the choice of sponsoring scientist and host institution.

2.         Resume. The resume should be no longer than 5 pages, and include a) address, telephone number(s), fax number, and e-mail address; b) education and academic degrees with dates conferred, awards, and honors; d) present and past positions; e) publications, presentations, and field research; and f) a list of pending commitments for the fellowship period, including other fellowship and grant applications you have submitted, other pending employment, and any other professional activities that may require a significant time commitment during the fellowship period.

In addition to the document referenced above, please send us an Indirect cost waiver. The indirect cost waiver is a letter verifying that your sponsoring institution is willing to provide space, basic services, and supplies and will waive indirect costs in excess of $2,500 per year. Request the waiver early to ensure your application will be complete by the deadline. If you are proposing to be based at WWF-US headquarters in Washington, DC, this waiver is not required. All applications must be in English. Once your application is submitted it cannot be modified.

B. References

It is recommended that applicants contact each of their referees before submitting the web form in order to let them know that they will be receiving an email from fuller.fellowship@wwfus.org. Based on the email addresses provided by the applicant in the web form, each of the three referees will be sent an email asking them to upload a letter of recommendation to a password protected website. Please enter only one email address in the form.  If one of your referees does not see the email in their inbox, please check the email address that you entered, resend the request online, and check to make sure that the email is not being filtered by their ‘spam protection’. 

Letters sent on behalf of applicants should be in '.pdf' or '.doc' format, and should not be larger than 4MB. One letter should be from the proposed supporting scientist, one should be from your dissertation advisor (or other individual on your committee, if your dissertation advisor cannot be contacted or is serving as your sponsoring scientist), and the other should be from a person in your field who is familiar with the applicant's career goals and achievements.

Applicants will receive an email notification when each letter of reference is received, and should use those emails to track which letters have been received in their file.  All letters must be received by 5 pm EST October 20, 2008. 

Please note that it is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all letters of reference are submitted before the deadline, and that referees have sufficient time to submit letters. 

Review Process: Evaluation and Selection of Fellows

Fellowships will be awarded on the basis of applicants' ability, accomplishments, and potential to become a leader in their field. Applications will be initially reviewed by WWF staff to ensure eligibility and relevance to the stated research topic in general and WWF's mission and programs in particular. Each finalist will be invited to WWF-US headquarters for an interview with a committee of WWF staff. This committee will make a final selection based on the potential of the applicants' work to inform conservation practice and WWF programs and the applicant's performance in the interview. WWF will help match finalists with their WWF sponsoring scientist at this stage in the review process. Please note that the final interview will be conducted in English.
