Prior to working at WWF, Tom worked for several companies both within and outside the environmental community, and spent two seasons doing wildlife surveys for the Forest Service in the inter-mountain western United States. He received his B.A. in Geography with a minor in Biology from Boston University. He has an M.A. in Geography from University of Maryland. His thesis work focused on the identification of minimum forest area necessary for viable population of the Golden Lion Tamarin in coastal Brazil. Most recently, Tom has been studying GIS programming with Avenue, Visual Basic, and Java.
