Neil Burgess provides assistance to WWF representatives and ecoregion coordinators in developing biodiversity parameters for reconnaissance studies in African terrestrial ecoregions. This would include advice on data sources, expertise in and outside of the region, key questions to ask, addressing data gaps, integration with socio-economic information, and the use of GIS. Along with his colleagues, he is currently finishing the Africa conservation Assessment book that is part of the series of publications that the Conservation Science is producing in collaboration with Island Press. Burgess has been working with BirdLife-UK (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) as an ecologist and project manager before he became a full time consultant with WWF. Burgess's expedition work in Tanzania stimulated his interest in Afrotropical biodiversity, which was enhanced through his work on the eastern African Coastal Forests and other forest types in East Africa. Neil has also managed a program at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. He with his colleagues has built The Copenhagen Afrotropical database aimed to represent the distributions of as many African vertebrates as possible, and to use these data to tackle scientific questions and also to provide an input to conservation planning. Neil received his Ph. D. in Botany and his thesis was on the evolution of early land plants.
