Don’t Flush Tiger Forests

February 8, 2012

The toilet paper on your grocery store shelves may have a direct impact on the 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild. Not all tissue and paper towels are made from responsible sources.

A new report by WWF identifies the twenty U.S. grocery chains that were the biggest buyers of Paseo products in 2011, according to Nielsen research data. Paseo, the fastest-growing brand of toilet paper in the United States today, is directly tied to rain forest destruction in Sumatra. These paper products and those under the Livi brand name are made from fiber supplied by Asia Pulp & Paper (APP).

WWF has individually contacted the 20 retailers to inform them of their link to rain forest destruction, and urge each of them to stop sourcing these brands until APP changes its practices.

Which grocery chains stopped sourcing Paseo – and which companies have done nothing?

* IGA USA has issued a public statement that no IGA Exclusive Brand products in the U.S. are sourced from APP. IGA has noted that, as a group of independent retailers trading under the IGA brand, individual stores make their own decisions about what goods they sell. IGA is currently working with its retailers to take a stand against selling Paseo and other paper brands in IGA stores that are linked to Indonesian rainforest destruction.

If you stop buying Paseo and Livi toilet paper until APP stops clearing natural forest, we can help ensure a future for the forests of Sumatra, the community, and the tigers, elephants, and other species those forests support.
