Energy production is the largest source of these emissions, but agriculture contributes a significant share—about 24%, according to the World Resources Institute. Clearly, improving the way we produce food is critical in the fight against climate change.
To sustain our planet’s natural resources for future generations, WWF is working with leading food producers, traders, processors and retailers to produce food more efficiently—using land, water, and energy more efficiently, and releasing less waste and greenhouse gas. This work is challenging enough, and it’s complicated further by climate change and population growth.
For decades, the Great Barrier Reef has enjoyed World Heritage Status and been synonymous with diving, tourism and with Australia. But in June of this year, UNESCO threatened to downgrade the Great Barrier Reef to the World Heritage ‘In Danger’ list; a category populated predominantly by war-torn and developing nations. The final decision should be made in 2015.
WWF and The Coca-Cola Company, are trying to make sure today’s farmers to apply environmental knowledge to farming. Agricultural runoffs like pesticides, fertilizers and topsoil are some of the greatest threats to the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest reef in the world.
