Because tourists naturally seek out the most beautiful places to spend their holidays, they are being targeted for development first. In many cases these are coastal destinations.


But these areas also tend to support high levels of biodiversity so if coastal development is not well managed, there can be negative effects on the habitat, which may increase the threats to vulnerable species.
