Transforming the Sugar Industry

From our tables to what we eat and drink, and increasingly found in our gas tanks, sugar is everywhere.

As one of the world’s thirstiest crops, sugar has a significant impact on many of the world’s environmentally sensitive regions, like the Mekong and Atlantic Forest.

WWF is working with influential market leaders to help ensure key commodities, like sugar cane, are grown in a manner that ensures more sustainable use of natural resources.

WWF helped establish the Better Sugar Can Initiative six years ago with retailers, investors, traders, producers and other non-governmental organizations. Now known as Bonsucro, the initiative seeks to reduce the social and environmental impact of sugar cane production by establishing global standards to certify sustainable production.

These efforts are beginning to pay off, with the first certified sugar cane offered from a Raízen mill in Sao Paulo, Brazil and purchased by The Coca Cola Company’s bottling system.

WWF remains committed to transforming the sugar industry, calling on buyers of sugar, including retailers and manufacturers, to commit to Bonsucro certified sugar and begin purchasing it as soon as possible.
