The Alliance is making a difference in a wide range of forests and forest-dependent communities in the major regions where World Bank client countries are located. For example:
- In Brazil, the Alliance has given ongoing support to the Amazon Region Protected Areas initiative, the government's effort to place 50 million ha. of Amazon rainforest in well-managed protected areas.
- In the Lao Peoples' Democratic Republic, the Alliance is helping villagers sustain the largest natural forest in Asia under active community management.
- In Africa's Congo Basin, the Alliance has played a key role in a sweeping multinational effort to form trans-boundary protected areas and establish trust funds for their management, and cooperate on forest sector policy reforms.
- In Bulgaria, Alliance support for independent forest certification has contributed to the certification of roughly 1 million ha. of natural forests under the Forest Stewardship Council certification system.
To achieve these kinds of results, the Alliance draws effectively on the combined attributes of the two partners: WWF's global network of national and program offices, and an extensive presence in the field, all linking it with other NGOs at every level, and the World Bank's economic and policy influence in the donor community and private sector. The Alliance relies on collaborative relationships with a wide range of civil society organizations, private sector institutions, government and multi-lateral agencies, philanthropic organizations, and others to develop solutions to the threats facing the world's forests.
