Green Reconstruction

WWF's Green Reconstruction Policy Guidelines promote the use of sustainable design and appropriate technology solutions such as this constructed wetland for wastewater treatment.

WWF wrote Green Reconstruction Policy Guidelines as a road map to recovery and a guide for managing the consequences of disasters. These guidelines initially developed by WWF in Indonesia in the wake of the 2004 tsunami, now form the basis for economic and environmental reconstruction across WWF's global network.

The Green Reconstruction Policy Guidelines are designed to:

  1. Mainstream environmental concerns into all aspects of reconstruction.
  2. Build strong, legitimate local institutions that are self-reliant.
  3. Develop an overall spatial plan for environmental goods and services as well as development.
  4. Create good governance that is transparent and accountable and that includes local communities.

WWF also has developed tools and training to support humanitarian agencies to utilize the guidelines [including]

   1. Environment Stewardship Worksheet – a tool for designing projects with minimal environment impacts
  2. Report Card – a monitoring and evaluation tool for assessing compliance with green reconstruction guidelines
