WWF Helps Establish Sangha Tri-National Foundation for Congo Basin Protection
March 2007
The biologically rich forests of Central Africa were given a monumental boost on March 9, 2007, when the governments of the Republic of Congo, Central African Republic and the Republic of Cameroon established a foundation to support the growth and management of the three connecting parks that fall within their borders.
This trans-boundary forest region — called the Sangha Tri-National — is one of the most important conservation areas in Central Africa. It is home to not only a wide variety of habitats, including a large river system and lowland forests, but also diverse animal populations like forest elephants, lowland gorillas, chimpanzees and bongos.
The Sangha Tri-National Foundation will ensure there is long-term financing to support the area and will be managed by a board of directors, consisting of representatives from the three governments, the Wildlife Conservation Society and WWF among others.
