WWF has brought together the Coral Triangle’s communities, governments,scientists and conservation experts to address its most pressing environmental challenges.

Notable Accomplishments

1990s

  • Established the first collectively managed national marine park in Indonesia—Bunaken—as part of Indonesia’s growing system of marine parks
  • Established the first transboundary protected area for sea turtles, spanning a series of islands off Malaysia and the Philippines
  • Played a key role in banning blast and cyanide fishing and poaching of coral and other marine life in the Philippines’ Tubbataha Reefs National Marine Park

2000s

  • Aided in the efforts of local community organizations to keep illegal commercial vessels from fishing in Mabini and Tingloy in the Philippines
  • Worked to have a permanent ban on the sale of sea turtle eggs on Indonesia’s Sangalaki Island
  • Gained commitments from the Philippine and Indonesian governments to establish a “peace park” in their shared waters to protect the migratory corridors and spawning areas for tuna
