WWF has been working with Coral Triangle communities, governments, scientists and conservation experts since the 1970s to address the most pressing environmental challenges that the region faces today.
Notable Accomplishments
1980s
- Helped the Philippines become the first Asian country to benefit from the debt-for-nature swap, a finance mechanism that cancels a portion of a nation’s debt to another country in exchange for funding of conservation projects
1990s
- Assisted in establishing Bunaken, the first collaboratively managed national marine park in Indonesia
- Supported establishment of the first transboundary protected area for sea turtles, spanning islands off Malaysia and the Philippines
2000s
Indonesian fishermen’s group recognized for identifying solutions to fishing challenges. Learn how WWF contributed
- Helped expand Tubbataha Reefs Natural Marine Park by 157,000 acres
- Helped establish four wildlife management areas totaling more than 2,600 acres in Madang Lagoon, Papua New Guinea
- Helped assess pressures on Solomon Islands coral reefs, contributing much-needed data to the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network
- Supported launch of the Coral Triangle Initiative, which included commitments by six governments to safeguard marine resources and ensure income and food security for the millions of people who depend on those resources
