On October 17, 2008, the WWF Galapagos Program received an award from the Galapagos National Park Service (GNPS) for its support for the installation of the floating base Tiburón Martillo to control illegal fishing activities in the Northern islands of Galapagos and to promote marine research. The WWF Galapagos Program provided the GNPS funds from the Galapagos Marine Biodiversity Fund (GMBF) for the floating base. The GNPS organized a special ceremony to recognize all individuals, conservation organizations and tourism operators that supported the Tiburón Martillo project. Local authorities, representatives of national and international organizations working in Galapagos, and members of the local community attended the event.

The Galapagos Marine Biodiversity Fund (GMBF) was established in 2006 by the WWF Galapagos Program in collaboration with Ecoventura, an Ecuadorian-based tour operator which operates in the Galápagos Islands, and AEROGAL, an Ecuadorian airline company. The mission of the GMBF is to contribute towards the conservation of the Archipelago by supporting conservation projects related to marine conservation and education.
