Gulf of California

Projects - Network of Managed Areas

Upper Gulf of California and Colorado River Delta Biosphere Reserve – Authorities at three levels of government, the scientific community, national as well as international conservation organizations, including WWF, and fishermen of the local communities have joined forces to save the vaquita. Working together by the name of "Alto Golfo Sustentable" (AGS). Most notable among the initiatives is a effort brought forth by the fishermen of the Gulf of Santa Clara, Sonora, and San Felipe, Baja California to retire fishing nets that measure six inches or more. The fishermen realized the elimination of the nets is inevitable due to regulations and that it is preferable to voluntarily withdraw from such a practice - in exchange for payment - rather than lose the opportunity to fish, lose their source of income and have to secure a new job.

San Lorenzo Archipelago National Park
Located in the Midriff Island region in front of the coast of Baja California, the Park is approximately 144,000 acres with 21,120 acres of no-fishing area. San Lorenzo Archipelago National Park was created in April 2005 to protect a high productivity marine and insular system that sustains important populations of marine mammals and sea birds; and for the sustainable use of important commercial and sport fisheries. The area is also an important generator of biological resources for fisheries, especially for the small pelagic fishery.

Marine Zone Espiritu Santo Archipelago National Park
Located in front of the coast of Baja California, the Park is approximately 119680 acres with 1,600 acres of no-fishing area. The Marine Zone of Espiritu Santo Archipelago National Park was created in May 2007 to protect one of the most important fishing and tourism areas in the Gulf of California. The area sustains high biodiversity of fishes, marine mammals and sea birds; contains a high variety of marine habitats such as rocky reefs, estuaries, beaches, bays, and rodoliths beds; and high ecological integrity.

San Pedro Martir Island Biosphere Reserve
San Pedro Martir Island Biosphere Reserve is known for its great marine and terrestrial biological wealth and is important for the region's economy. WWF and its partners work in this protected area to reduce the impacts of fisheries currently representing one of the main threats exerting pressure upon the reserve's resources.

"Our job is to influence people, policies and businesses that drive change. Rather than stand on the tracks as the locomotive comes down on us, we have to get on the train and influence the engineer."
