"We need to look for solutions on these two islands which address the needs of the people while maintaining the health of the ecosystem they live in. We can no longer be complacent – a balance needs to be found or we risk losing it all."

About Ginny Ng:

My role with WWF is to coordinate our projects on the two islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Because of WWF’s comprehensive approach a typical day for me could touch on protecting the region’s remaining natural rain forests; supporting sustainable agricultural techniques for local farmers, and addressing the threat of palm oil to the region’s biodiversity. Politically, working with the three countries of Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei can be very complex, as each presents its own unique challenges and strengths.

I was born and raised in Malaysia, lived mostly in Peninsular Malaysia but have since worked in Sarawak and Sabah. Originally I intended to work mostly in zoology or at least in research, but have since had the opportunity to expand my experience to support broader human and economic development. When I served with the United Nations Development Programme, I was involved in discussions on poverty, transportation, capacity assessment and development, land rights, human rights, and land use. As a result my approach to conservation is very attuned towards the necessity for sustainable human development.
