About Richard Carroll:
Richard ventured into the dense tropical forests of the Central African Republic in 1980 as a Peace Corps volunteer and never really left. He lived in the bush for 17 years and has walked more than a thousand miles in the forest studying gorillas and other wildlife. Richard now spends half of his time there, overseeing a variety of efforts to conserve habitats, species and cultures of local populations in Central Africa's Congo Basin, the world's second largest expanse of intact rain forest.
After more than three decades in the field, Richard considers the formation of the Congo Basin Partnership - which includes close to 40 organizations and an investment of over $128 million - the "fulfillment of a 20-year dream," or at least one of them.
