The Global Forest & Trade Network - North America (GFTN-NA) held its first annual meeting for GFTN-NA participating companies and other stakeholders at WWF US Headquarters in Washington, DC. Attendees shared ideas and best practices around responsible forest products purchasing and trade, and how companies can source credibly certified wood and paper products by participating in GFTN. Several influential companies were in attendance, including GFTN-NA Participants Walmart, Procter & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson, Domtar, and newest participant Williams-Sonoma, Inc., as well as The Coca-Cola Company, Sears-Canada, Tetra Pak, Hewlett-Packard, USAID, Forest Stewardship Council-US and Rainforest Alliance.

Presentations covered topics including the amended U.S. Lacey Act banning illegal wood imports, how companies can increase the market for sustainably harvested wood, how to implement a responsible purchasing program, and credible certification. Attendees discussed with one another practical solutions to major challenges in responsible purchasing, including compliance with the Lacey Act and how to effectively communicate a company’s environmental commitment to employees, suppliers and other stakeholders.
