WASHINGTON, D.C. - April 9, 2008 World Wildlife Fund (WWF) was one of four organizations awarded National Geographic Channel's "Preserve Our Planet" Award for Excellence at an event held April 8 at National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, DC.

WWF was honored by National Geographic for its efforts to preserve the diversity and abundance of life on Earth and the health of ecological systems. On Saturday, March 29, 2008, WWF brought the world together for the second annual Earth Hour. At 8 p.m. local time, millions of people around the world turned off their lights to show how working together can make a difference in the fight against climate change. National Geographic Channel was the U.S. media partner for the event, and participated at its headquarters by also going dark.

The "Preserve Our Planet" award recognizes National Geographic Channel's partners who share its dedication and commitment to raising awareness and inspiring people to take action by providing relevant conservation information, tips and lifestyle alternatives. This year's awardees are World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), ecoAmerica and GreenCareers by MonsterTRAK.

NGC first announced the "Preserve Our Planet" initiative last spring to reflect NGC's long-term commitment to bringing relevant conservation information and practical everyday tips to viewers on-air, online and in local communities. A comprehensive Web site, www.preserveourplanet.com, launched last October, and the network is dedicating significant on-air inventory to PSAs and interstitials helping viewers understand and lessen their individual impact on the environment.
