WWF Partners With Giant Eagle Inc. On Sustainable Seafood

WASHINGTON, DC, July 30, 2009 – World Wildlife Fund (WWF) today announced a partnership agreement with Giant Eagle Inc., to develop a strategy for responsibly sourced seafood. Under the agreement, WWF will assist Giant Eagle Inc. in assessing current sourcing of the company’s top seafood species in order for the company to develop a sustainable seafood sourcing strategy. 

WWF will help Giant Eagle lead the discussion with the company’s source fisheries to effect a change in practices across the supply chain and encourage these fisheries to achieve Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) sustainability standards in the trade and harvesting of seafood.

“We are committed to working collaboratively with industry players to promote sustainable seafood to protect the ocean and ensure a continued supply of seafood into the future,” said Bill Fox, vice president and managing director of WWF's fisheries program. “We look forward to working with Giant Eagle as they develop best practices on this important and very complex topic.”

Through its Sustainable Seafood Initiative for wild-catch fisheries, support for the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), and organization of the Aquaculture Dialogues, WWF is actively engaged in the Common Vision partnership of North American non-governmental organizations for sustainable seafood.
