WWF Reacts to Announcement that President Obama Will Attend to UNFCCC Talks in Copenhagen

WASHINGTON, November 24, 2009 – The following statement was issued today by World Wildlife Fund’s Climate Program Director Keya Chatterjee in response to the announcement that President Obama will attend the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which takes place in Copenhagen, Denmark from December 7-18.
“We are pleased that President Obama will be in Copenhagen during the early part of the climate summit. It's important that his words during this important moment convey that the United States intends to make climate change a legislative priority, not simply a rhetorical one.
“If his presence during the latter days of the COP becomes necessary to secure the right commitments, we hope the President will be willing to return to Copenhagen with the rest of the world's leaders during the final stages of the negotiations.
“The world will be listening closely for a signal that climate change and a clean energy economy is President Obama's top legislative priority after health reform. To make good on any promises made in Copenhagen, the President should put the full weight of the White House behind Senate passage of a climate bill in the first part of 2010.”
