World Wildlife Fund's Klamath-Siskiyou regional field office works with regionally-located environmental organizations on a variety of proactive field projects. These include:
The Upper Sacramento River Exchange
World Wildlife Fund supports the River Exchange in expanding stewardship and restoration efforts in the Upper Sacramento River and neighboring watersheds by collaborating with restoration partners and stakeholders.
Working in northern California, the River Exchange fosters watershed education and stewardship by providing developed curricula, training and learning experiences for students and teachers; and by promoting community participation in informational forums, stewardship restoration outings, watershed planning meetings, interpretive programs and community events.
The mission of the Upper Sacramento River Exchange is to foster stewardship, education, and community involvement in the Upper Sacramento River Watershed and beyond. To date, the River Exchange has engaged nearly 20,000 students through a unique collaboration with the Siskiyou County Office of Education, and over 15,000 community members and visitors have participated in coordinated stewardship programs and events. The River Exchange collaborates effectively with numerous and diverse conservation groups, agencies, public and private educators, and community organizations.
Siskiyou Field Institute
The Siskiyou Field Institute offers hands-on natural history programs for the young and old. Renowned scientists lead participants to beautiful and remote locations. Discussions, lab exercises, and direct observations showcase living specimens, ecosystem processes, and threats to biodiversity facing the Klamath-Siskiyou Ecoregion.
SFI offers a program of science-based field courses and extended field trips for youths, adult non-scientists, those with some scientific background, experienced naturalists and professional ecologists. In 2002, some courses will be offered for college credit though Southern Oregon University. SFI is located in the Cave Junction area of the Illinois river valley; 30 miles south of Grants Pass, Oregon, on Highway 199. The Siskiyou Field Institute (SFI) provides inclusive, hands-on research and participatory learning opportunities in an unparalleled "outdoor classroom," led by renowned scientific instructors who showcase the unique ecology of the Siskiyou Mountains and the greater Klamath region. SFI grew out of the successful 1997 "First Conference on Siskiyou Ecology." SFI's first two field institutes (1998 and 1999) each drew over 300 participants.
