Daniel is a marine conservation scientist on the Oceans team. He is currently supporting monitoring, evaluation, and learning efforts in priority seascapes while providing scientific and technical support to conservation projects around the world. Daniel is an interdisciplinary scientist, with an extensive publication record covering fisheries management, small-scale fisheries, bioeconomic modeling, spatial analysis, marine protected areas, social science, and human health and nutrition.

Originally from Brazil, Daniel earned his PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), where his research focused on the enabling conditions for successful area-based conservation in small-scale fisheries. Before joining WWF, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health, where he researched the intersection of marine conservation and human health and nutrition in the context of climate change. Daniel is the co-founder of a non-profit organization in Brazil and has worked with government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and universities across Latin America to develop innovative solutions for fisheries management and marine conservation challenges.
