US Diplomatic Strategy Prioritizes Climate Impacts

In response to today's release of the Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review (QDDR) by Secretary of State John Kerry, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) issued the following statement from Senior Policy Advisor David Reed:

“There’s a deepening relationship between our nation’s prosperity and security and the environmental well-being of our partners around the world. Today’s QDDR smartly recognizes the significant influence climate change will have on international relations and our ability to advance US objectives abroad.

“The threats climate change poses to US foreign policy are both immediate and acute. The QDDR addresses these threats head-on while promoting democratic societies, ensuring inclusive growth, and seeking to mitigate conflict before it occurs.

“As the State Department further weaves the climate imperative into its diplomatic and development work, it should continue to address the role that increasingly scarce natural resources will play in fulfilling our economic and security objectives. Smart environmental policy will drive smart foreign policy.”
