In response to today’s Obama administration announcement on new regulations to curb illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) issued the following statement from President and CEO Carter Roberts:
“America is the largest importer of seafood in the world. Every seafood consumer in this country deserves a dinner plate free of environmental destruction, and every US fisherman deserves to face only fair and legal competition. These regulations forward that vision and represent a blow to criminals who sell illicit goods in the US to the tune of up to $2 billion a year.
“More work remains. This rule only accounts for a number of at-risk species, which make up about 25 percent of illegal imports. The federal government should move quickly to rein in illegal imports of shrimp, which drive down prices, hurting hard-working coastal fishermen. We hope the next administration will continue this work and fight to keep all illegal products out of US markets.”
