WWF: Arctic Drilling Rules Highlight Need for Safety

In response to today’s release of proposed safety measures for Arctic oil and gas drilling, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) issued the following statement from Margaret Williams, managing director of US Arctic programs:

“Today’s proposed rules essentially decide how much risk the federal government is willing to tolerate if it allows offshore oil and gas exploration to move forward in the US Arctic. With the future of Arctic communities and seas on the line, that risk needs to be exceedingly low.

"It’s critical that these rules clearly reflect the true difficulty of capturing, containing, and cleaning up any oil spills in this high-risk setting and should be finalized before any drilling activities begin.”
