WWF Statement on Appointment of John Kerry to Special Presidential Envoy for Climate

Today, the Biden transition team announced that Former Sec. of State John Kerry will serve as Special Presidential Envoy for Climate and will sit on the National Security Council. In response, WWF issued the following statement from Alejandro Perez, senior vice president of policy and government affairs:

“This is the first time that a climate envoy has been elevated to Cabinet level and marks a significant milestone in addressing the urgency of the climate crisis. There is no one better suited for that role than John Kerry and this announcement demonstrates the Biden administration’s dedication to bold climate action.

“From his time in the U.S. Senate to serving as the nation’s top diplomat, John Kerry’s deep commitment will be invaluable to protecting our environment and our planet. He played a key role in negotiating the Paris Agreement and rejoining the accord will be the best first step this country must take.

“Every day, the science is sounding the alarm about the risks of climate change and loss of nature, so the path ahead will be full of hard work to protect the planet. WWF stands ready to provide support and make that happen.”
