WWF Statement on EPA Plans to Address Methane Emissions

In response to today’s EPA announcement seeking to reduce methane emissions from America’s oil and gas sector by 2025, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) issued the following statement from Lou Leonard, vice president, climate change:

“Today’s announcement rightly zeroes in on one of the most potent greenhouse gas pollutants. The recent discovery of an enormous methane plume over New Mexico shows that methane pollution is a major consequence of the US oil and gas boom.

“The package of actions provides another example ahead of UN climate talks in Paris that the US is committed to slashing its share of climate altering emissions. Fully implementing and expanding on these proposed actions is crucial to ensuring that the US is positioned to meet its 2020 and 2025 targets. Moving forward, the Administration should ensure that this plan captures all sources of methane to maximize the benefits to public health and the climate.”
