In response to today's Senate confirmation of Gayle Smith as Administrator of the US Agency for International Development, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) issued the following statement from Todd Shelton, vice president of US government relations:
“Gayle Smith’s decades of leadership in development and national security will ensure that USAID continues to be a driving force in the global development community. Her appointment comes at a critical time as the agency is pushing hard to end extreme poverty, diversify livelihoods, empower women, build resilient societies, promote peace and security, and respond to humanitarian crises.
“WWF looks forward to continuing our work with USAID to strengthen wildlife conservation efforts and support local communities protecting their own forests, rivers and coastal areas. Together with USAID we can ensure equitable and sustainable development for the world’s most vulnerable, and help rebuild resilient communities in environmentally friendly ways.”
