WWF Statement on U.S. Import of Elephant Trophies from Zimbabwe and Zambia

In response to the U.S. government’s announcement that it would put on hold a decision to allow import of elephant trophies from Zimbabwe and Zambia, WWF issued the following statement:

“This is a wise and welcome pause in the process, allowing decision makers and the public time to better understand the details which led to this decision by the US government. WWF opposes any hunting that threatens species or habitat sustainability.

“During this time, we continue to urge governments and the public to keep full focus on efforts and policies that directly combat the separate and much greater threat to elephants, which is the illegal wildlife trade. On average, 55 elephants are killed every day due to illegal hunting, also known as poaching, and the illegal ivory trade that drives it.”
