WWF statement on UNFCCC parties announcing commitments to 1.5C-aligned national commitments that reduce emissions on a straight line or better by 2050

Today at COP29, seven parties to the UNFCCC announced a commitment to reduce emissions on a straight line or better by 2050. In response, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) issued the following statement from Marcene Mitchell, WWF senior vice president of climate change:

"This is a critical statement of intent to combat the climate crisis. It’s wise that these countries aren't putting off emission cuts only to later pledge steep and very difficult reductions.

"But if they are to have any impact, these pledges to align new national commitments with the Paris Agreement need to be swiftly translated into urgent, decisive action. Energy systems must be transformed and we must rapidly phase out fossil fuels, scale up renewable energy, and improve energy efficiency. People and nature must be at the heart these actions -- so that communities are supported through a just transition, ecosystems are restored and protected, and the benefits of a sustainable future are shared equitably by all.

"Every fraction of a degree matters, and steady, science-based emissions reductions are essential. Time is not on our side and every delay makes the challenge greater. We need public and private sectors to come together, using the tools we have to deliver on these promises with bold, concrete policies, investments, and immediate action to secure a sustainable, equitable future for all."
