WWF: US-China Climate Announcement Good News for Paris

In response to today’s US-China joint presidential statement on climate change, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) issued the following statement from Lou Leonard, vice president, climate change:

“It’s clear that countries like China aren’t standing pat with the official pledges made earlier in the year. It’s particularly encouraging to see China phasing down its finance for fossil fuel projects at home and abroad, while also stepping up to provide climate finance to poorer countries equivalent to that provided by the US to the Green Climate Fund.

“This is good news as climate negotiators look for ways to close the emissions gap separating us from a safer future. Between now and Paris, other countries, including the United States, should follow suit and look to bring more to the table. In particular, countries like the US should work to ensure that Paris makes good on past promises to support poorer countries in the fight against climate change.”
