In response to today’s Executive Order on coordinating US efforts in the Arctic, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) released the following statement from Margaret Williams, managing director of US Arctic programs:
“The President’s Executive Order reinforces the importance of US leadership in addressing unprecedented impacts that Arctic people and ecosystems are experiencing as a result of climate change. The order also recognizes the need for sound Arctic stewardship, as industrial interests rush to exploit resources that were previously inaccessible for thousands of years. It’s critical the federal government coordinate work among all agencies to ensure that conservation and sustainability are guiding principles in this new frontier.
“WWF looks forward to working with the Arctic Executive Steering Committee, as decisions made today by federal, state and local leaders will largely define region’s future and it’s critical we get it right. There is no 'undo' button when it comes to wisely managing our precious Arctic resources.”
