Integrated Ridge-to-Reef Management of the Mesoamerican Reef

This $9 million GEF project will support the countries of Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico as they address the threats to the Mesoamerican Reef defined in the 2007 Tulum+8 Regional Action Plan. Those threats include ecosystem and habitat degradation; unsound tourism development; land-based sources of pollution; overfishing; global climate change; and inadequate institutional, political, and human capacity. The project will use an integrated “ridge-to-reef” approach to better manage the watersheds draining into the Caribbean Ocean as well as coastal zones and marine habitats affecting the Mesoamerican Reef system in these countries.
